DCF77-Lightning protection |
The lightning protection FG444000 has been replaced by the lightning protection FG444100.
Using outdoor antennas means that thunderstorms may cause
very high interference voltages on the antenna cable. This can damage or
even destroy not only the directly connected radio controlled clock system
but also any other connected devices.
Overvoltage as direct consequence from lightning cannot be avoided, but the device can be protected from destructive effects. It is therefore necessary to "short-circuit" all the lines with overvoltage and to reduce the overvoltage as quickly as possible. Afterwards the device should return to its original specifications.
The lightning protection is therefore a combination of different components. Fast absorber diodes with a response time of < 1 nsec and a discharge current of 5 kA keep the potential differences between antenna core and zero to a constant 12 V. The following gas arresters, when lit, short-circuit the lines to the earth connection point.
