Support regarding GPS week rollover

First things first:
The next GPS week rollover will take place on April 6, 2019.

What is a GPS week rollover?

NAVSTAR GPS-system has its own date calculating scheme, based on counting weeks. The data signal sent by the GPS satellites contains the week number in the form of a 10bit variable. Based on this variable the GPS receiver calculates the correct date. The limitation to 10bit consequently limits the number of viewable weeks to 1024 maximum. After 1024 weeks the numerator is resetted to zero. This is called week rollover.

What's the problem?

Older, obsolete GPS receivers may possibly not handle the GPS week rollover on April 6, 2019, or may achieve the end of their operational life until December 31, 2018. Wrong / implausible system time as well as GPS reception failure may occur. Both effects are irreversible for affected GPS receivers.

Which applications are affected?

Applications delivered before Q3/2005 are very likely affected. For these applications we offer a check via a specific contact form. A check is only possible via this contact form and only if all mandatory fields of the form (fields with *) are correctly and completely filled out.

Which applications are generally NOT affected?

The following hopf GPS products are generally NOT affected by the GPS week rollover:

  • System 6844(RC)
  • Module 8024/GPS
  • Time Server 8029NTS/GPS
  • Time Server 8029HEPTA/GPS
  • Time Server 8030NTS/GPS
  • Time Server 8030HEPTA/GPS

Applications delivered after Q3/2005 are normally also NOT affected.

What are the solutions for affected applications?

The serial number of the GPS base system (e.g. System 6841 / 6842) is required. The serial number of the GPS base system can be found on a label mounted on the housing of the application. Serial numbers of individual function boards do not enable a check.

You can find the hopf commissioning number on the following documents: order confirmation / packing list / dispatch of delivery / invoice. The commissioning number on these documents is marked with 'KN'.

Furthermore we would kindly ask for your patience after registration - processing your request and researching device data may take some time. Please refrain questions pertaining to the state of affair.
